Charter School

Governance

KEY Academy is governed by a five-member nonprofit public benefit corporation. The Board of Directors is comprised of individuals with a wide range of experience and expertise. During the election process, the Board will ideally elect individuals whom have a background in, but not limited to, law, accounting, business, education, real estate, and public relations. KEY Academy’s Board of Directors will also reflect the diversity found within the school community and will uphold the mission and vision of the School.

The Board of Directors meet once a month, sometimes more, to conduct business and fulfill their duties. Additionally, Directors will attend annual policy governance workshops to gain a better understanding of the principles and concepts of the policy governance model. The Board of Directors are responsible for upholding the School’s mission, operations, fiscal plan, finalizing, and adopting policies and procedures.

KEY Academy also believes parent and community involvement is critical to the success of the School and, therefore, will encourage parents to become active participants in their child’s educational program. Each family will be asked to provide at least fifteen (15) volunteer hours (seven (7) hours for single parents) per school year. To ensure that parents are involved in the educational program at KEY Academy, a minimum of one Board seat is reserved for parents of students at KEY Academy. The purpose of the parent Board seat is to ensure that at least one Board member represents the parent community of KEY Academy and upholds the mission and vision of the School from their point of view.

In addition to the Board seat reserved for a parent, parents will be encouraged to become active in participating in a parent teacher organization (PTO). This organization will organize fundraisers, social events, parent informational nights, and be just one of the outlets to connect with the School’s community. The School, depending on facility space, will designate a PTO room, to help establish a regular meeting place, resource center, and center for parent organizing.
